Last words of author Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961),
spoken to his wife before he committed suicide.
Early the next morning he shot himself.
I have lots and lots of time to waste on the internet. And occasionally, in the midst of all the time wasting, I come across something sort of worthwhile.
Like just now, when I found this list of the last words of famous writers. They were all interesting, and you should go read the whole list, but one really stuck with me. Ernest Hemingway’s last words were, “Good night my kitten,” spoken to his fourth wife, Mary. Early the next morning he shot himself.
I just can’t stop thinking about it. I’m a girl, and emotional, and separated from my lover, so first off, the sweetness of, “Good night my kitten,” made me tear up a bit. Not even ashamed to admit it. And then thinking of Mary snuggling up to Ernie’s bushy beard and falling asleep, probably thinking everything was normal. Not knowing that he’d just said good night to her for the last time. And Hemingway, with his arm around her…already knowing what he was going to do in the morning? Knowing he was holding her for the last time.
God, what must have been going through his head? I mean, I know he started to go a little crazytown in the end, that he’d already been undergoing shock therapy for his suicidal thoughts. I’m just having a hard time marrying the innocence of, “Good night my kitten,” with the gruesomeness of shooting yourself in the head. I’m sure Mary did too.
